The open-source radeon driver is notorious for overheating laptops.
Unfortunately, you cannot use fglrx/Catalyst on Ubuntu 12.10 or later for that
GPU. Your best best is to stick with 12.04 and use the proprietary
fglrx/Catalyst driver for now.

I would test other desktop environments to see if the issue is with
Unity or the openchrome code. xfce would be a good test, since it is a
basic, composited desktop. You can try installing xfce in your current

I changed it to xorg so it would gather video information, and also
because I wasn't sure where you were getting 800x600 (plymouth, lightdm
login, and/or after logging in).
Anyway, make sure you have python-launchpadlib package installed.
