Something to try, run system monitor. If I have it open I don't have any
issues playing videos. Strange but true.

Desktop drapes does not load on system boot, even if option is checked,
even if program is manually added to startup applications in gnome.
Program sometimes freezes if a directory with lots of wallpapers is
