Maybe the problem is more general - it seems every 2nd boot fails.
Really strange! I'm having an eye on this - can't really tell which
circumstances lead to the freeze. I'm using a dualboot-environment:
Maybe Windows leaves some hardware in an unknown condition?!

I'm using a Dell D820 too and experience problems when booting while
wireless-switch is TURNED ON. Boot hangs at about 2,1 boxes filled at
splash-screen. PC does not respond to any key-press except pressing
power-switch for 5secs. When booting while wireless-switch is TURNED OFF
there is no problem
Desktop effects (Compiz) are working now again - played arround a bit
with xorg.conf ;o) - So from my point of view this bug is done. I had
some trouble with the Indexer (Desktop-Serach) and one day a new kernel
killed my audio output but that's a different story and already fixed.

Problem solved for me:
Restarted xserver 6times (was unable to switch to console), logged in and
started by "startx".
Ran update-manager and updated serveral packages including gdm, human-theme etc.
et voila: system starts normally!

Did some more tests:
- turning off desktop-effects helps
- booting 2.6.22 works now quite good - no further problems

Same Problem here - updated 7.10 to 8.04beta1. The problem may be caused
by display driver. After installing "915Resolution" symptoms are better
but not gone. Info-Popups in Gnome-Applet area seem to slow down system
dramaticly. Kernel 2.6.22 seems to be less/not affected.
