I'm not sure these last 2 apport-collect data were the same problem since there was no NetworkManager core. All I know these are the same types of problems I've seen since upgrading to Ubuntu 9.10 where the GNOME display manager (I guess gdm-simple-slave) just goes away and I need to log in

I backed out the patch, and update manager was still giving the same error. I shut it down, brought up the Synaptic Package Manager, marked packages for upgrade, and applied them, which completed with no error. Just to check, I brought up the update manager, and it is happy now. -- checkPriority
