This happened to me while installing Ubuntu 6.06.1. I was unable to do anything with /var/log/installer/syslog because the system had frozen up, forcing me to restart. FWIW, the time I decided to leave the mountpoint for my (pre-existing) home directory partition as the default /media/hdb1
