Fixed this issue via installing lilo to replace grub for boot loader -
(ref: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=925803highlight=Y710).
I'd rather a slower/longer boot time, than to miss an essential piece of
hardware.

Installed Ubuntu 8.10, updated to latest available revisions without
issue, DVD drive present during install, after required reboot, no dvd
drive, no devices present in /dev that would lead to an optical drive.
