Without the kvm-intel module, everything works (albeit slow).
This is on a C2D 6600 (2.4 GHz).
The oops happens exactly when the installation switches from the splash
screen to the installer screen.

Hold the investigation a bit. I've suddenly started to receive this on
earlier kernels too. It might have been caused by a failing dvd-rom
unit. Anyway, it doesn't seem like a regression bug for now.
I'll get back to this after some more testing.

Kien Tran, I get this error too. Additionally I experience it on both on my
machines at home (both running dapper).
The only way I found to temporarily resolve it is to rm -r the .azureus
directory in my /home/user directory.

Try and add vga=0 as a kernel boot parameter in grub and see if it
resolves your issue.
After resuming try to remote ssh into the machine and retrieve the Xorg
and the kernel log. Please attach them to this bug.

I'm experiencing the same issue on a Dell Latitude C640. The workaround
works, sort of. The X-server doesn't crash but the DPMS remains off.
Only by remotely accessing the macheine, issuing a xset dpms force on,
makes the machine come alive again. (Short of the three-finger-salute)
