This bug no longer occurs for me in 12.04 (same computer that I had
before on 11.10 where I did experience this bug) with no PPAs for
Compiz, NVIDIA, or X. If you are having this issue on 12.04, I recommend
purging any related PPAs and seeing if the problem persists.

Yes, turning off the Place Window plugin worked for me. Windows no
longer spazz out when in-between workspaces, in-between monitors, or
just not stritcly contained in one viewport in general.
The downside is that now all programs that don't exlplicitly state a
location to map the window at are
myspell didn't work (was already installed), but installing hunspell-en-
ca did (that's for Canadian spelling, replace en-ca with whichever
language pack is appropriate for you, most likely en-ca, en-us. I don't
think there's a British English one for hunspell though.
Then restart LibreOffice.
The remove NVidia's vieo hardware acceleration workaround (remove
libvdpau1) solved both this problem AND the even more annoying flash
videos show up in all white pixels of the screen when firefox is
minized bug.
Adding the lines to the config file, on the other hand, fixed the
swapped red/blue
I found a solution to this bug. Install the version of Compiz from
Daniel van Vugt's ppa and that will fix this issue. Even if you restart
compiz, it remains stable.

I was able to remove almost all screen tearing by doing the following:
Disable flipping (aka. double buffering) in nvidia-settings
Enable vsync in nvidia-settings
Enable 'sync to vblank' in Compiz (under the OpenGL section)
DISABLE 'detect refresh rate' in Compiz (under Compositing section)

This keeps happening to me now. I usually have to restart X with
Ctrl+Alt+PrtSc+K, log back in, and kill the extra compiz process.
Sometimes I have to do it twice.

The exact behaviour of this bug seems to change with updates. At this
point in time, compiz has a chance of experiencing this bug even when
started normally, but that probabilty of this happening is not THAT
I started being affected by this after installing the JACK audio plugin
for pulseaudio in synaptic. The problem persists, however, after I have

Okay, I guess one of the updates did something, because now compiz has
like a 25% on startup of entering fail mode where it will crash the
first time you switch workspaces (and occasionally upon closing
windows).
Re-installing X-Updates made absolutely no difference this time.

Upon purging the updated X packages I had and reverting to the current
official release version in the repositories, the behavior has returned
to being predictable exactly as described in my original post.
Looks like it will always crash after running compiz --replace, but
since I undid the X updates, it won't happen so long as you don't switch
window managers or restart Compiz.
Which is unfortunate since compiz needs to be restarted every few hours
otherwise window movement becomes slow.

compiz --replace works for me in that it gets rid of the window
slowness, but doing that causes the much more severe bug 903512 making
it impossible to switch workspaces without a complete graphics freeze,
so it's not really a fix.

I don't think this is linked to swap activity. I'll have to let my
computer stay on overnight to make sure, but I've never seen my computer
use more than half my ram (and I only have 4GB), let alone start using
swap space.
The only time I've even seen swap space used is that a couple kilobytes
The latest update for GNOME completely ruined everything. Now, Compiz
crashes when switching windows all the time. Even after a fresh reboot.
I no longer have any usable window managers. Looks like I've have to go
back to Ubuntu 10.04 until this is fixed.

Actually, the chance of a crash now appears to simply be random. I've

the GNOME update yesterday from Update Manager, the problem is much
worse and now behaves just like you described (it used to freeze mid-
slide, but now it's right after it finishes sliding, at it doesn't
happen ALL the time,

to fix screen tearing. I eventually did fix it, but the X-Updates did
nothing. Since I didn't need it, I ran ppa-purge, and now everything
SEEMS to be running good.

window movement decays over time, and is perfectly fast for the first

Interesting, I just discovered that #33 's mouse polling fix only works on ONE

(for an unrelated problem), but it gave me a chance to see if this
happens on a desktop computer, and it does not, so it seems to be
specific to certain types of cd drives. I'm not the only person to have
