By mere coincidence I decided to update the system presenting this
problem when the Tribe 5 of Kubuntu was released, so I'm able to confirm
that the problem is still present in Gutsy, and has the same solution
(options snd_intel8x0 ac97_quirk=hp_only in /etc/modprobe.d/options).

I have a notebook with a Celeron M 1.5 and had this same problem. It
went away after adding p4-clockmod (without quotes) to /etc/modules.
It even added the ability to change the CPU governor (showed as CPU
policy). Hope this helps.

I'm using Kubuntu Edgy in my notebook (an Acer TravelMate 2313LCi) and
had more permanent volume issues: the headphone slider always controlled
the system volume, even with no headphones plugged in. So, when using
the volume keys in the keyboard, everything worked as expected, except
