Didn't have any effect in my laptop, however,
sudo sed -i 's/XINERAMA/FAKEEXTN/g'
/usr/lib/jvm/java-6-sun-1.6.0.04/jre/lib/i386/xawt/libmawt.so

I've tried again today to see if something had changed. I had to power off the
computer. I restarted in safe mode and did an apt-get update apt-get
dist-upgrade and everything seems to be working fine together.

Same here on i386. Downgrading to 1:0.2ubuntu1-0ubuntu1 also fixes the problem.
Before that, if I entered knetworkmanager from command line, the answer was
that it was not installed and suggested to do a sudo apt-get install
knetworkmanager. The answer to this it was that I already had the last
I confirm the same problem in Gutsy, with kernel 2.6.22-9-generic, in a Sony
Vaio VGN-FS415B.
It just gives me a delay at boot, the graphic boot image disappears and it
continues normally in console mode. Afterwards, the system looks to work rather
smoothly.

I'm also having this problem since I upgraded to 7.04. No problems previously
nor in Windows even now.
In the forum some people report that the problem solved after the last kernel
update but that's not my case. I've also tried a different kernel (i386 instead
of generic, ie x86x64 in my case)
My first impressions with the last update (2.6.15-27-686) is that the
issue has been fixed, or at list it has improved. The delay on Mounting
Root File System is not an issue for me any more. I'm not yet sure
about the system performance, though.
