sound has somehow been fixed since i set 'sound settings...' -->
'Output' --> 'Play sound through' to 'Headphones Built-in Audio' two
days ago - now sound works fine in all games, browsers and applications
in general
thanks for the help of everyone who responded

not sure if this may be a cause of the problem, but, just for the
record, i am with gnome-session-flashback latest version, which has not
been upgraded for about 2 years

it has turned out that the problem persists even with the older versions
of linux-firmware (1.157.11 and 1.157.10) - i tried with them today
what i did was:
sudo dpkg -i linux-firmware_1.157.11_all.deb
sudo reboot
and nothing changed
then:
sudo apt-get remove linux-firmware
sudo apt-get
the issue definitely affects the sound, which is why i set alsa-driver
as affected
the version of linux-firmware was 1.157.11 before the fatal update
here i attach a file with kernel ring buffer(dmesg) messages

two months and nothing?!
i still have no sound in certain internet browsers and games - i think
the problem has occurred since i installed an official update with
linux-firmware (the previous official release (of the package) for
ubuntu 16.04 64)
at least tell me to whom i should address/direct
why is there not any response to this bug report?!
the latest updates were released just now, including linux-firmware
1.157.13, and the problem is still there even after i installed them on
my computer - there is still no effect when adjusting sound volume
slider from the sound menu on the menu
the problem is still there to date - may the proposed update resolve it
