Checking out your theory I moved menu.lst out of the way. Re-ran update-grub with /etc/default/grub set to generate UUID's. That grub.cfg is OK for Lucid...but refers to /dev/hda2 as sda2. No UUID's . That leaves the Debian boot hanging waiting for root file system. I have never been able to
