I had a similar issue and this thread helped me to resolve it.
For me it was a symlink in /etc/ld.so.conf.d/
i386-linux-gnu_GL.conf - /etc/alternatives/i386-linux-gnu_gl_conf
The file contained some mesa directory reference which caused Steam to fail at
startup.
Steps to fix:
sudo unlink
If you set up a local diversion as instructed in the section Renaming
ack-grep on Debian-derived distros on their website, remove it:
sudo dpkg-divert --remove /usr/bin/ack-grep

I am affected as well. Dual monitors, Intel graphics, Chrome was open.
Happens randomly. Sometime the password box is still visible on one
screen, but not on the other. When it disappears on both screens, only
