This bug persist in OO 2.4.1 of Ubuntu 8.10 (updated from 8.04).
Developers won't fix this but that appears in a LTS :S

Hello I have a hp 6820s with the Intel Corporation 82801H (ICH8 Family)
HD Audio Controller (rev 03).
When I updated from Ubuntu 8.04 to 8.10 sound works, but some days later
it crashed. I try anything (change volume, use pulseaudio, use oss,
etc...) but I fix it installing kmix (yes, in gnome)
I think that this bug maybe duplicated:
