The observation I posted about a week ago is not correct unfortunately.
The problem seems to appear less often, but I still had one occurrence
where I had to restart gnome-shell.

I have disabled VMware's feature to automatically grab and ungrab the mouse
cursor and it seems like the bug addressed here is not occurring anymore, but I
haven't thoroughly tested this yet.
This setting can be changed (in VMware workstation) by opening Edit ->
Preferences -> Input -> Automatic
