I have just tried Linux Mint 17.3 on a Dell XPS 13 9350 plus a Samsung
TV, no difference as the problem is present there too.

To be fair $PARAMS without quotes works for the other parameters, but it
doesn't for values containing spaces like the PostgreSQL connection
info. A work around is to use a URL for PostgreSQL, which does not
contain spaces instead.

I think you should use `"$PARAMS"` in the patch rather than the unquoted
`$PARAMS`. There are some parameters containing spaces like `--libpq-
conninfo`.

Checked 40-libsane.rules, it's already like you suggest. It's reasonable
that VirtualBox and a native install work differently, however.

After upgrading to 11.10, the scanner does not work anymore (the printer is
fine in the 32 bit version of Ubuntu using Samsung's unified drivers).

The problem is not in proprietary drivers, since people say Ati does not
support. Both distro versions use open source drivers, but probably there is a
regression in the new series.

Firefox suggests firefox-gnome-support. Sorry for verbosity but...

With firefox-gnome-support it works. In Xubuntu is not installed by
default, so it's possible to add a dependency? (Note liferea already
depends on firefox as I see at http://packages.ubuntu.com/gutsy-
updates/liferea)...
