I am seeing this issue still. Ubuntu 10.10, Asus N61JQ

Setting options snd-hda-intel model="olpc-xo-1_5" or options snd-hda-intel 
model="basic" does not seem to do anything. 
Installing 
http://people.canonical.com/~diwic/temp/alsa-intel-hda-optiplex-dkms_1.0.23_all.deb
 gets a response of having a bunch of obsoleted modules, and does not appear to 
do anything. Lots of restarting involved.
