Sorry for not getting back but I installed 9.10 and this problem
disappeared as did all my previous e-mails :-[ .

Well now - this is interesting, I didn't know how to switch Compiz off
so I went there and under 'General' I returned everything to default -
that didn't help. By chance I then went to System/Preferences/Appearance
Preferences/Visual effects and nothing there was selected, I selected
Extra and
** Attachment added: "Dependencies.txt"
