I have a Slackware "current" with the same problem here.
I verified that the command "mtp-detect" launched by the user results in an
"access denied error" in libusb.
If I do something like
chown :audio /dev/bus/usb/ -R
then Dolphin starts working good again.

@gdp77: I just notice this before: it's not yet clear if this is a Firefox,
NVidia or a Xorg issue.
I think this is a combination of different factors since Firefox itself has the
same problem with fixed images in other OSs but with less incidence.

slow scroll with image as background-repeat
If the problem is cause by the X server or by the GPU driver it wouldn't
be an issue of Firefox, isn't it?

I solved just with removing the pango-graphite package.
Didn't need to purge, just remove :)

For what I can see that removing pango-grapfite solve the problem.
I'm wondering if at this point we can say that it's not a Firefox 3.0 bug but a
pango-graphite bug.

I think I've just said that IMHO there's no bug regarding the background-repeat
but all the slowness we can experience derives from fixed background.
In fact the gradient witch gdp77 is talking about is a fixed background.
But I know that there's another open issue regarding the fixed background.
I think this kind of error went from saved session.
Try to disable session saving, restart X server, reconfigure and restart again.
Let me know if I'm wrong.
I came in this thought because I saw this error when the results of
xprop -root | grep XKB
and
gconftool-2 -R /desktop/gnome/peripherals/ke

In Linux Mint Daryna this issue affects all menu items too.
If it could be of any use I can provide a screenshot.

Nop, Opera has his own (proprietary) rendering engine called "Presto".

@joelpt : I was seeing this behaviour on Win Xp either on Firefox 2.0 and
report this so long ago.
I think that it's not a bug of Firefox on Ubuntu but a slow behaviour of Gecko
rendering engine.
In fact I can see this behaviour on Camino for Mac on DeerPark on Slacky and
Win and in older Mozill
OT:
I'm waiting for the porting of KDE4 apps to Win! :D
I've just installed Firefor, Opera, IE6 (eolas version), IE7, Safari and
lynx on WIN and
Konqueror (obviously), Oakpark, Firefox and Opera on both Ubuntu and
Slackware 12...
Back to the point: "viewable with any web browser"?
This is a good workaround, but... a workaround! :)
I think that renouncing some features or functions of a program couldn't be
assumed as a solution.
But I think also that, for now, it's the only thing working.

I'm now sure it's not an Ubuntu issue: probably it's a Gecko
images-related-memory-leak.
I tried also using other Desktop Environment (lighter ones like XFCE) to avoid
graphic memory usage, and also with Firefox lite (no plugins, no addons,
nothing alse than Gecko UI): problem's still here! :)
I forgot to say that I check and tested this issue on Windows Xp Sp2 (patched),
Ubuntu 7.04 and Slackeware 12.0 (patched).
I een tryed Firefox 2.0.0.7 (on Slack an unofficial reease) and Deerpark Alpha
2.

Are there images in the frames?
No need to try: Firefox runs at normal speed in websites using frames and

Hi everybody,
I'm new here.
I'm developing pages with background images and I can confirma that background
images slow down the rendering of the pages while scrolling it down.
Maybe some information can be of use:
1 - no matter if the image is png or gif: the CPU usage while scrolling grows
up..
