Bug can be closed... Turns out I forgot to reboot first after performing
all the upgrades on the old Xenial installation. After reboot, the
upgrade process to Bionic starts fine.

During an attempt to upgrade from Ubuntu 16.04 LTS to 18.04 LTS, the
"do-release-upgrade" commands exits due to "an unresolvable problem
occured while calculating the upgrade".
Before the upgrade, I successfully executed apt-get update, apt-get
upgrade and apt-get dist-upgrad
