Here's another complaint about not being able anymore to load custom
DSDT's:
I have a one year old HP 6830s laptop. It has a very noisy fan (when running
Linux).
I managed to fix that by tweaking the DSDT resulting is a nice quiet laptop.
I upgraded to 9.10 and tried to do the same trick, but
I have run alpha-4 and now alpha-5 and the problem persists, immediately
after booting (with nosplash and no quiet) :

The strange thing is that the problem is not exactly reproducible, if I
boot 10 times the problem will maybe show up 5 times, and
One addition to my previous comment, I booted 8 times, and it looks like
the problem occurs only if I have not connected the power cord. So it
only occurs if the laptop is running on batteries.

I think I have the similar problem.
I have an Asus Z3F laptop, with :
[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~# uname -a
Linux bismarck 2.6.27-2-generic #1 SMP Thu Aug 28 17:20:02 UTC 2008 i686
GNU/Linux
and the touchpad also does not work at all.

Same for me, Asus laptop with Intel Core Duo processor.
Excessive CPU usage by checkgmail during startup for about half a minute, after
that it works fine.

This means you are trying to boot on a CPU without PAE support. The
default kernel is compiled with PAE, so it won't run on a non-PAE CPU
:-(

I upgraded to 2.6.24-18, this one runs fine too.

I compiled the kernel from source using Karoly's instructions above (comment on
2008-04-15).
It takes a couple of hours, and installing some additional tools (debhelper,
dh-make, build-essential ), but the result is there, it boots now:
[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ uname -a
Linux hood 2.6.24-17-openvz
I have the exact same problem as reported by ldng on 2008-04-22.
The kernel level is also 2.6.24-16 (binary download with normal apt-get upgrade)
I don't think there is currently a more recent binary download available.

I am also having problems booting the openvz kernel.
My config is a fairly old Medion laptop, Pentium 4, 512 MB.
Kernel version is 2.6.24-15-openvz
Because I cant cut/paste from a non-booting system, I made a picture of the
screen and attached it.
These message are coming about every 10 seconds.
