Does it work if you install gdm and configure ubuntu to use that rather than

This occurs for me when the laptop resumes from being suspended, as well
as when I leave the laptop idle for long enough that the screen turns
off.(i.e. the screen locks, then after a few more minutes the system
cuts power to the screen).

This affects me as well. Update manager gives me an error that it
cannot calculate an upgrade path and that I do not have ubuntu-desktop
