My trouble was caused by an other program (a visual keyboard) that I

I can confirm this behaviour in two different computers.
I'm wondering if it is possible that pulseaudio handle two microphones
sources at the same time if alsa doen't return the information that an
external microphone is plugged in.

You can use your laptop doing this : change the BIOS display config to
either Integrated or Discrete. Integrated enables Intel's GM45 hardware,
which is fully supported out of the box and has the best power-
efficiency. Discrete enables the ATI Mobility FireGL v5700, which is
basically an ATI Radeo
You may try with a liveCD of karmic. You can try installing an ssh
server, and see if you can connect ton the computer after resuming.
We also need to know what is you GPU.
