Turns out this is a XORG issue.
Fixed it by creating a file called 50-plantronics.conf in
/usr/share/X11/xorg.conf.d with the following content:
Section InputClass
Identifier Plantronics
MatchVendor Plantronics
Option Ignore true
EndSection
This gets X to ignore the

Thanks Jevonearth, was just about to test the newer kernel, now I don't
have to.
Could a guru script something up that can detect state change and run
that command as needed?
That way we can use the Plantronics at least a little for now until a
permanent fix is available.
