I have the same symptoms on my CD drive, an old TEAC CD-W516EB. I have a
fresh install of Ubuntu Feisty Fawn 7.04.
I have not tested the HAL thing you guys are talking about - I don't
know much about compiling my own packages from source.

2x1024MB DDR400 RAM. I have an NEC-3520a DVD drive with custom firmware
