If you Add to Panel... in GNOME you get a nice selection of Custom
Application Launcher, Application Launcher, and then applets.
Application Launcher allows you to browse the .desktop files to select
your app.
When you define a Startup Application you get a textbox to enter

name. Fine for experts. Not so good for noobs.

I have this same problem in 9.10 with both a CanoScan LIDE 70 (not supported)
and a Nikon LS-50 (supported).
Its not the GIMP plugin as this can be replicated with the scanimage command
line tool.
