There should be a textread function provided with the package octave-io.
Since the upgrade to octave-3.4 isn't happening in oneiric (11.10) it

This script etc/SIVP.start is seriously misconfigured.
It looks for libs in it's own subdirectory which doesn't even exist.
There should either be symlinks there or the script should be patched.

Setting UFW to false has been most excellent improvement for me!
I do run nvidia's driver for my 7600gt and am affected by that whiteout
bug but I don't notice any performance drops here. I tested both
settings with the Phoronix Test Suite (unigine being the quickest full
screen test to set up) an

I can confirm this behaviour. I have random corruption which looks like
keyframes being completely skipped. This happens on two separate
installs and if I remember correctly, it has been happening since around
the time I upgraded from gutsy to hardy.
