I found a way to startup in kernals post-3.2.0.32, based on some
information I found here:

To make the fix persistent, I edited the default grub settings (the
guidelines in the link above did not work):

I just tried the latest upstream kernel (3.8.0-999generic), but the
problem persists. I did try kernel 3.2.0.37 when it became available
through the Software Update Manager, and it booted successfully once.
