Nope, it's still broken, at least when I connect remotely via OS X's VNC
client.

Confirmed here, too. VNC worked with 8.10 and stopped working with
9.04. Using latest nvidia drivers and running compiz. Mouse updates
are sent through correctly to the VNC server machine, but screen
refreshes don't show up on the client after ~10 seconds.

Hi Andrea,
I've gotten a new computer since I reported that bug, and I have no way
to test if it's still an issue. It doesn't seem to be a problem with my
new hardware. Thanks for checking in.
Best,
Jeremy

I've aleady responded (via email) to the previous comments. It looks like
my responses never posted. I'm no longer experiencing these problems -- I
got a new laptop which this bug doesn't apply to.

The gnome-panel package is not affected as far as I can tell; the
report a problem tool seems to have gotten the wrong dependencies
here.

I have this problem, too. It only happens with desktop-effects enabled.

Note: After uninstalling Beryl, I tried to reproduce this bug, and found
that the flicker occurs only *after* typing the root password in Option
1 and Option 2, above.
In other words, the transition from the normal (i.e. unfaded) screen
to the grayed-out (faded) screen occurs smoothly.
I confirm this bug on an Inspiron 8200 and Latitude D620 with NVidia
video cards.
Steps to reproduce:
1.) Install ubuntu (fonts look good)
2.) Install nvidia driver (nvidia-glx)
3.) restart X
4.) fonts look too large

Public bug reported:
Detailed description:
When the screen fades out, for example when asking for a root password
to launch software update, the display seems to hiccup and looks ugly.
Instead, either the fade should be smooth, or the fade shouldn't occur.
Steps to reproduce:

I have since gotten a new computer (a Latitude D620), but I'm no
longer experiencing the issue. I'm not sure if this is because the
bug has been fixed, or whether the issue was hardware specific.
