Bug apparently fixed for me, too.
i enabled update manager from startup.. And no problem !
-2.6.31-15 kernel appears to fix the issue.

For me too(as pan323), the problem was fixed when i disabled update
manager from startup
command launched from Startup Panel : 'update-notifier --startup-
delay=60'
bug appeared after 60s, and just once !
