I started to see the same behaviour after the last update under Ubuntu
14.04.2 LTS trusty. So far I was unable to fix it with the suggestions
from above.

When using two external displays, upon pressing ctrl-alt-f1 the
following appears in /var/log/syslog
Oct 25 14:38:38 nb-10512 kernel: [ 1584.547279] detected fb_set_par
error, error code: -22
The image freezes until I return to X by pressing ctrl-alt-f7.

grub-install --root-directory /media/mountpoint-of-usb-drive
/dev/dev-of-usb-drive
