This was fixed 9 months ago in upstream PHP 7.4.15.
Can you apply the patch for #80781 and get it out in the next release of
Ubuntu's PHP?

I downloaded Ubuntu 8.04, and ran it for
about 4hrs as the live CD, with no issues, I have now loaded it in its own
partition and it is running fine. I will test it on my computer for the next
few days to make sure it performs as I require

It has gotten so bad I have switched to Mandrake for the
time being, as this doesn't freeze or give error messages on boot. but I will
revert to Ubuntu as soon as I have a cure, I am running Ubuntu 7.10 in a
virtual machine on this distribution to try to emulate
