I have successfully resolved this.
I had to apt-get remove libkrb5-3 (which removed Postgres 8.3, but no
problem for me), after that, the upgrade went smooth.

Wow! Has this bug really been fixed? (Or am I just lucky today?)
I just upgraded to the current Ubuntu Hardy (development) snapshot, and
my external harddisk (USB 2.0) works, and it works at USB 2.0 speeds!
Even ehci_hcd is loaded, too.

Failed to initialize the GLX module in kernel 2.6.24-8-gen
@Pär Lidén:
I think falling back to USB 1.1 if 2.0 is not bad, but it's not grabbing the
problem.
Let's repeat:
Same hardware setup in both tests:
- Booting Gutsy with the (old) 2.6.17 kernel: USB 2.0 works and speed is fast,
perfect
- Booting Gutsy with the included 2.6.20 kernel: USB 2.0 doesn
Yesterday I accidentally booted with kernel 2.6.17 (I think from Dapper?) and
everything worked totally perfectly!
ehci_hcd was loaded, running, everything was fine, USB was working at the fast,
2.0 speed.

ehci_hcd module causes I/O errors in USB 2.0 devices

The most annoying thing that this has worked in Edgy Eft. It broke in
Feisty, then it's still broken in Gutsy.
My only 'workaround' was to either:
1. unplug the USB device from my USB hub and plug it directly into my machine,
skipping the HUB. But I need the HUB because I have many USB devices
2.
I have a USB HUB. Some things don't really work well if plugged into the
HUB, eg. my Canon scanner only works in USB 1.1, not 2.0 mode (that is,
without the ehci_hcd module). Maybe there's a problem with ehci_hcd and
this HUB?

Mika please read the attachments (dmesg.log), too.
Yes, everyone's having the same problem!
Based on the links I included, too, it seems that when the ehci_hcd module is
not present, USB works in USB 1.1 mode. In USB 1.1 mode, the problem isn't
there.
Of course, USB 1.1 is dead slow for many ext
