I should clarify that the spurious blank lines are not the blank lines aspell produces when it has processed an entire line of input; those are expected. What I'm seeing is a blank line in response to, for example, the word 'it', and getting a blank back instead of a '*' as expected. This is much

The samba-common.postinst maintainer script is sourcing debconf's confmodule in the middle of the script. Moving this line to the top of the .postinst script fixes the error and samba-common now installs properly. ** Patch added: Move the source confmodule to the top of the script.
