Yes, the /run partition is full because of systemd filling it up with 414MB
of files.
What is systemd process doing?!?! This box was absolutely fine before

This is most probably a hardware problem
It's a software issue with systemd filling the disk. This caused the I/O
error.
Perhaps you also have a full disk, but then the error message should
say that.
This is also a bug. It should report full disk not I/O error.
