compiling with --with-audio=pa makes sound go properly through pulse, otherwise
no sound. works perfectly with the switch
using ubuntu hardy heron.

this problem can be solved by having the fstab line as
# /dev/hda4

instead of umask=007
000 gives read write permissions to everyone (ie the same as 777 in chmod). the
last digit is for the others which included samba. i
i've found specifically what the problem is and how to fix it in gconf.
When rhythmbox runs for the first time it sets the entry in gconf apps
rhythmbox library locations to /home/ubuntu/Music, which causes the
errors. Instead it should set the value to file:///home/ubuntu/Music (obviously
cant reproduce on the hardy RC live cd with the nv driver, where i have
previously had problems in older builds

install and run pavucontrol.
apps that use pulseaudio will appear in pavucontrol when making sound, and
those that do should all work together.
any apps that dont appear in pavucontrol will not work with any apps that do.
i think the best idea is to look for and report individual applications

all the hard work was done actually getting the plugin into the repos. this is
simply about actually installing it.
what regressions can there be?
currently vlc doesnt work with pulseaudio, with vlc-plugin-pulse it does.

the thing is that (according to the original poster) flash is installed without
flashpluin-nonfree being installed. apt was never involved. the original poster
did it directly from adobe website, so there should be no thought about
dependencies.
the original poster is also NOT using 64bit.

however, there is a problem for people who installed flash player a
kludgy way (in an older install) and now have the plugin for flash in

individual applications.
however, the gtk file chooser should at least be consistent with the
behaviour of nautilus, which means (at least for files ending in ~) they
should show/hide when show hidden files is checked/unchecked

yeah i missed that, but when you say system wide, its still a user specific
setting.
Changing in preferences sound device ... all of the options change to pulse
audio is what is required, and should be set by default.
the panel volume control does the right thing, the full volume control does
from earlier in this thread There are more that don't work than do
work, if compiz is stable for you just start it with SKIP_CHECKS=yes
however, couldnt there be some sort of gui for this. when you are in
preferencesappeareance, and choose normal effects etc, couldnt you be
given a warning

the default is currently Realtek ALC861 (OSS Mixer) but for this device
running off a freshly booted live cd for alpha 6. installed audacious as the
first thing i do... the audio output is alsa, buffer 500
changing to pulse, and then deleting ~/.config/audacious puts it back to alsa
alsa is definitely the default.

but this sentence doesnt make any sense. It should instead read:
