I had that problem, too.
I pinpointed the problem down to a setting on my router I enabled just
before the freezes started. Disabling CTS Protection (also known as
802.11b/g protection) on my router stopped my system from freezing after
bringing up the interface. You might want to try that.

Okay, I tried some stuff...
It seems as if the applet starts to malfunction after logging off and on again
or after the x-server has been restarted.
It works perfectly after a full reboot.
