Same issue on a HP ProBook 6560b (lg652ea) running Ubuntu 13.04 64 bits.
I modified the line GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT in /etc/default/grub from
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT=quiet splash
to
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT=quiet splash acpi_backlight=vendor
Brightness settings are even kept after a
just hope that validity will release their drivers in april 2012!!
