The script is not a random one. It is the most used one on the Ubuntu
forums in the 64bit section. The script is widely used because of the
repeated failure of flash to install to the 64bit version. Had flash
installed without the script it would never have been tried.

I think flashplugin-alternative.so is part of swfdec and should be
removed when flashplugin-nonfree is installed. If it isnt it is a
conflicting flash plugin.

Well I think I can save someone some work, gksudo nautilus is not
crashing now. Perhaps the updates I installed in the last 2 days fixed
the issue.

I am running Hardy Heron 8.04 amd64 installed with the release candidate

So far I have not seen upgrades since the release. On the 20th of April I did a
clean install of Hardy to a new drive. I have at least 3 times daily checked

I at least dont want pre release packages because of stability concerns.
But its been a week since any update/upgrade has been done. Even though
some have been released and some of the software is installed and of

Hardy release candidate has recieved no releases since the
I installed the Release Candidate on a new hard drive. The mount points were
detected wrong for the cd drives in fstab and the cd's were then mounted to
/media/CdTitle. I changed the cd lines in fstab from
/dev/scd0
/dev/scd1
to
/dev/hdc
/dev/hdd
and the cd's are now mounted to /media/cdrom
The fix for this could be as easy as making flash a prerequisite if it
isnt already, then adding the command to move , and the command to make
the wrapper to a postinst script in the nspluginwrapper package.

One has to wonder why, with the first step towards fixing this bug (Dell
coming pre installed). Why those 64bit computers come with the 32bit
version of Ubuntu installed. Perhaps if the 64bit version was good
enough to pre installed it would give buyers another reason to choose

hk47,
I know its possible to install a 32bit Firefox on the amd64 version. I wrote
one of the howto's you have linked to. But that doesnt solve some problems. One
is that you cant print a page from the 32bit browser. Another is that in kde
the browser doesnt use some of the themes. There are
IMHO relying on other distributions to help keep the code base of
Firefox 1.5 up to date is a prescription for disaster. When the failure
happens, and it will happen (2 years is to long a time) it wont be the
other distro's that will look bad, but Ubuntu. It may appear to some

The lack of a backport is of major concern to amd64 users of Dapper.
There is no way to easily replace the 64bit version of Firefox like
there is with the 32bit version. I also think the statment that it is
complex to get Firefox 2.0 running on Dapper to be a slight bit of an
exageration. The
The gap in market share may get worse. 32bit hardware is no longer being sold
or manufactured. The 64bit version of Ubuntu doesn't just work. In fact on
large segments of the Ubuntu English Forums people are told to install the
32bit version.
Common complaints about the 64bit version are
Thanks, but it wasnt as bad as it sounds. I have a web/file server (that runs
Ubuntu) that I back up most important files to. Plus the Dapper install was
quite old, I think from when Dapper was first released. I had learned a lot
since then. So I was able to repartition the drive to make it
I would but that install was wiped/deleted after I corupted the whole
drive about 3 weeks ago when I tried to resize a partition.
