In case useful, I have just done a fresh install of Xenial, followed by 'sudo
apt-get install synaptic'. The following error arose when trying to install

Yes, it does seem to be related to fat32, though the problem is still
evident when Thunar is showing a directory on ext4.
When retesting I also had a few surprises (unable at first to
reproduce). It is tricky because one has to check with 'ls -al' that
what Thunar shows corresponds the actual

Problem arose after update to Hardy.
I can access (edit and save) and move files, and create folders on the
mapped drives - but cannot copy files from my laptop for example.
Downgraded to a previous version of ncpfs (2.2.6-3) but that did not
help.

FYI, I had a similar problem after an upgrade in feisty. I could not get
menus back. At some point I tried installing xfce4 - which givers all
the menus I expect. Gnome and KDE still don't.

The suggestion above seems to have solved the problem:
sudo usermod -G admin myusername
I get all my menus back (apart from some additional I expected after
installing edubuntu-desktop).
