Which kernel do you use? AFAIK do many people have sound-problems since
the kernel update from xxx-12 to xxx-14...

I am using Feisty Herd 5 (x86) as VirtualMashine in VMWare Workstation (Host
System Ubuntu Edgy 64-Bit). At the moment I am installing. But when I tried to
play an MP3 (to test the Auto-Codec-Installation-System and selected the
first codec, I was asked if this is
just a little fix: download dar and libdar3c2a for DAPPER(!!) from
packages.ubuntu.com (.deb), install them, after that just install kdar
and everything should work perfectly (you can update dar when apt wants
you to)

Try to go to the console with ctrl+alt+f1, edit the xorg.conf (change
nv to nvidia), with ctrl+alt+f7 back to X, restart X with
ctrl+alt+backspace and everything worked for me again

I had an smimilar problem! Just changed
driver nv
to
driver nvidia
and everything was OK (Live-CD-ctrl+alt+f1, edit xorg.conf, restart X)
