ntfs-3g external drive, and it will umount in mid trasfer. System load
is 3.00 at this time, and I can even ls at the command prompt.
Only after reboot does my system fully recover from this crash/unmount.

I just installed this kernel and rebooted:
3.12.0-999-generic #201309190446 SMP Thu Sep 19 08:47:59 UTC 2013 x86_64 x86_64
x86_64 GNU/Linux
Guess what. It worked (for the most part). The USB-VGA monitor showed up
in Ubuntu's Display manager and I was able to run all 3 monitors at the
same time.
