Excuse me, but I think that the whole "windows shows not this problem" approach
should be entirely revised.
On my Dell Vostro 1500 with a Seagate st9160823as windows XP sp2 and ubuntu
Gutsy "pre-fix" behave EXACTLY the same way with a rather aggressive (and
noisy) power management.
Not only, but a thread on a italian tech forum I read, showed the same
unpredictability: http://www.hwupgrade.it/forum/showthread.php?t=1595762
To summarize some posters had problems ONLY with Ubuntu, some ONLY with
windows, some had problems EVEN when the laptop was AC-powered.

There is a big chance that this problem is BIOS/firmware related and it could
be somewhat more useful if any of the posters could effectively test the
behaviour of their systems under different condition and check hdparm result
before and after trying:
1 hr with windows (idle)
1 hr with linux (idle)
1 hr with windows (benchmarking or working)
1 hr with linux (benchmarking or working)

both on battery and on AC.

I've done it before posting.
