i have similar problems with an Acer Aspire 5650:
- I have a sound device
- there are no error messages
- there is no sound on any output device
I did a dist-upgrade from feisty to hardy.

I also could not enable desktop effects, but i am using nvidia hw.

I'm using an Acer Aspire 5650 with Nvidia graphic chipset.
OpenGL desktop effects run well till tribe3 i guess.
I can enable the checkbox in the GL Desktop menu, but after closing and opening
it again, the checkbox is unchecked.
