I am truly sorry to say that I have tried many of the recommended
solutions for this problem but to no avail. I am running Ubuntu 16.04 on
a AMD 8-core desktop machine and if I ever ever ever even try to give a
command like sudo apt-get update and apt-get upgrade I inevitably find

Also not to mention that even when I use my 16.04 without ever using the
sudo apt-get update command, the wifi network is also not detected by
ubuntu.

I have tried all the above but did not work for me? I was running Ubuntu

My usplash size is right on boot (I use in 0x323 mode - 1024x768, so I
don't see it fullscreen.. my choice), but I see it fullscreen on
halt/reboot, it doesn't keep resolution settings...

I looked better:
when it freezes it displays (to me) 4 mini-usplashes in the upper part of the
screen wich are difficultly visible...
pressing CTRL+ALT+F1 unlocks it... and gdm starts
