Solution: remove the usbmount package. This is probably a Won't fix bug. If
the usbmount package was automatically installed in earlier Ubuntu versions, it
should have been rem
Is there anything special you do before it happens? I haven't seen it in
a long time. You could look in the syslog/dmesg and see of there are
any hints there when it happens.

When I attach a modem adding /dev/cdc-wdm0, it is created with root:root
permission. It should have the "dialout" group.
This problem is solved by changing the line
KERNEL=="tty[A-Z]*[0-9]|pppox[0-9]*|ircomm[0-9]*|noz[0-9]*|rfcomm[0-9]*",
GROUP="dialout"
in /lib/udev/rules.
Done (no special permission needed for that). Could you please report

I guess the fixed state, at least whe set by a package update, should
not be changed so you probably should open a new bug report in an
updated Ubuntu with "ubuntu-bug firefox" and link the upstream bug
report from there.

It did solve this issue, but I got the original problem, bug #769103, so
it seems I must live with either using escape twice at bootup or disable
the splash until bug #381517 is solved.
