The problem occurs however after the screen was locked (and shortly after
unlocking, for instance if clicking with the mouse or changing to another
I can confirm it's a problem with libmtp. From the argyll devloper:
This libmtp opens every USB device to see if it is a media device.
This upsets the Spyder3.
The workaround is therefore simple: I removed libmtp from my system with
synaptic (as a result I lost banshee too), and since then
I used Spyder3 successfully in Ubuntu 11.04, buit it indeed isn working
anymore in 11.10. I use the fine ArgyllCMS software. I both tried
version 1.3.3 and 1.3.5 (64 bits and 32 bits on two different computers
with 11.10).
Just for the record my experience. I issue the command

The clock applet once and awhile froze my desktop (that is: the panel),
but I discovered a work around (killing the gnome panel in a terminal).

When I clicked on the Clock applet, the Gnome desktop froze when Evolution was
running.
Now I clicked it (the Clock applet) without Evolution, and then a dialog
appeared asking me if the application was allowed access to the Google Calendar
Another user can indeed open Googles Calendar without a problem on this Ubuntu
computer. Weird. I cannot.
What could be the cause of this problem then?

I started rhythmbox as a command in bash, and it neither showed up with
a window, nor crashed. No activity could be noticed. The system monitor
showed rhythmbox as a sleeping process.
After terminating the process with Ctrl+C, i inspected /var/crash, but there
was no rhythmbox file te be seen
Oh, after submitting the previous comment i noticed that each second
execution of rb ended up in one process. Both processes seem to merge.

So i decided to experiment a bit further. The following commands generated the
