Changing mirrors didn't do anything for me, but the forum thread Arup
linked to had the fix for me. After doing:
sudo dpkg --add-architecture i386
sudo apt-get update
I was finally able to install skype with:
sudo apt-get install skype
So it looks like even though I got the same

I wanted to install Skype and the guide I followed said I need to first
activate the Canonical Partners repository in the Software Sources app
in the Other Software tab. There are however no repositories listed in

I've got the same problem, also on 64 bit Ubuntu 12.10. I've scanned the
forums and askubuntu for this problem and at least one other person
affected by this bug used Wubi to install Ubuntu which I did too, so
this might be related if it should turn out that Arup also used Wubi
since Skype seems
