Daniel, you're absolutely right. I'm trying to install Xilinx ISE 10.1 tools

Ubuntu, and it failed because of no /bin/arch. More work and apparently
more job security for me, but it detracts from what I am trying to do.

the problem is that, for developers working with Python, they'll often
have a custom Python build in $PATH before /usr/bin/python. it's quite
a common custom configuration.
Also, personally, I'd attempt to make distro packages that are resilient
to user $PATH changes. but I guess that's up to
, the ones that don't just try all the sourceforrge
mirrors and they all no longer have these 2 fonts although they used to. The
msttcorefonts package is broken now and trys to install every time I install
another package. I had to remove it.

Well, when I click OK the dialog goes away and everything continues
(apparently) just fine.
HOWEVER, I tried a complete re-installation, and the exact same thing
happened. So although it is seemingly a minor error and easily bypassed,
it also seems to be something that an entirely new user to
/var/lib/dpkg/lock - open (11 Resource temporarily
unavailable)
E: Unable to lock the administration directory (/var/lib/dpkg/), is another
process using it?
E: _cache-open() failed, please report.
So I'm reporting it.

on the Dell Mini (Inspiron 910). It boots up fine and looks beautiful,

I've recently been getting incredibly frequent crashes with Firefox 3.0.1 (to
the point that I had to write this report in opera), making it unusable. I
removed the flash plugin, figuring that was a probable cause, but the crashes
continued.
It goes longer without segfaulting if I only have the one tab open in safemode
(I've been using 'the new' facebook (facebook.com) to crash it as it's the most
css/javascript heavy thing I know of).
Is there currently an xulrunner and a firefox built with debug symbols in the

I also experience this issue on an Acer Travelmate 5520 with AMD Turion
processor and ATI Radeon 1250 gfx.
Further to the description above - all of which occurs on this machine -
when running on battery the brightness does change to its lower setting
(as specified in the power saving applet) but
Apologies for the thread hijack - could you please advise how I can
apply this fix (video.diff) to a new Gutsy installation, to stop
periodic brightness flickering of the LCD panel. I believe it's related
to the issue described by Matthew Garrett above.

I updated the nvidia driver, but this didn't fix it. I am looking for
a config file, but so far, havn't found one. Thanks for the suggestion,

I worked around it like this:
mv /usr/bin/sudo /usr/bin/sudo.orig
then create a file /usr/bin/sudo containing the following:

then your regular sudo works just like the non secure-path sudo

I can't say I've ever not noticed the dialog -- but the dialog itself is a
particularly
aggravating issue. Like Cory, I tend to hold down Shift while thinking about
what to type next -- it's not an indication that I need help.
A never ask me again tickbox on that dialog would be perfect.

Go to Tools - Preferences.
Movie Details tab.
In the Defaults area, make sure none of the drop-down lists are set to N/A.
Save, try again.

Printed a version, result was lighter than I wished for. Attempted

F-Spot color adjust dialog appears but all sliders gray and inactive
I haven't tried Gutsy yet. However I think the problem is down to not
being able to enable DMA on the drive. When I run hdparm I get the

When burning ISO images to CD using K3B the process sometimes hangs
right at the beginning, before Starting disc write is displayed in the
progress window. When the hang occurs, I am unable to dismount the blank
CDR and have to reboot the
fwiw, I switched to the Human theme a few months back, and this problem
hasn't reappeared. I suspect it was something to do with the H2O-
gtk2-Amber theme.

I've just run into this bug, too, on my from-scratch install of Edgy on
a Dell Inspiron 1300...
I similarly thought that powernowd should have been running, since I had
the package installed; it took 10 minutes to figure out that the init
script was silently exiting due to the cpufreq_ondemand

this is still an issue in current dapper; it just bit me after a routine
kernel update/reboot.
The error I got was:

offending theme; it was Qt in my case. With that directory, gnome-
theme-manager hung; without it, it works fine.

Just to confirm, this is unpleasant behaviour: on my Dell laptop, apt-
index-watcher's CPU spiking causes the fan to start up, then stop, every
~5 seconds. Killing apt-index-watcher fixes the problem and the fan has
remained off since then.
