I had the same problem with the firmware not supporting detected chipset
for D-Link DWA-140 B2 in Natty and I've managed to resolve it by
blacklisting rt2800usb module in /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf.

I must correct myself, playing video with Totem is OK, it's vlc that has
problems with it (Ubuntu freezes).

I'm using Intrepid Ibex with all the updates and playing video with vlc
still causes ubuntu to freeze and playing it with Totem makes keyboard
and mouse unresponsive -- it is possible though to switch to terminal
(ctrl-alt-f1) and kill the process.

Ubuntu Hardy X freezes while playing content
Since it looks like Hardy is affected by this as well, I changed summary
to Laptop is hotter with Ubuntu installed.

Laptop is hotter with Ubuntu installed
I'm running Hardy for a while now and I can confirm that my laptop is
still considerably hotter when I'm running Ubuntu than when I'm running
Windows XP. I haven't tested battery life yet though.

I should probably say that I don't own T60, I have HP nc8430 with ATI
x1600. The thing is that I put the following lines to the Screen
section of xorg.conf:
DefaultDepth 24
SubSection Display
Modes 1680x1050
EndSubSection
Modes have to be those of your system (1440x900). This worked perfectly
I'm using alpha 5 and enabling fglrx also forces X to load in low-
graphics mode. Mouse also starts to behave strangely (as described
above).

Public bug reported:
My laptop (HP nc8430, Core 2 Duo 2 GHz, ATI x1600) is very hot with
Ubuntu 7.04 installed. If I boot Windows, the CPU temperature is normal
but in Feisty it gets over 80 degrees Celsium and I have frequency
scaling enabled and fans turned on all the time.
** Affects: Ubuntu
Yeah, I also lost battery life - it used to be an hour longer with Edgy
installed.
